Sa‘i: A Complete Guide

🌿 1. What is Sa‘i?

Sa‘i means to strive, to walk, or to run with effort.

In Islamic worship, Sa‘i refers to:

  • Walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah

  • Beginning at Safa and ending at Marwah

  • Performed after Tawaf

📖 Allah says:

“Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.”
(Qur’an 2:158)

🧭 2. Things to Do BEFORE Sa‘i

✅ 1. Ensure Tawaf Is Completed

Sa‘i must be done after Tawaf (except in specific Hajj cases).

✅ 2. No Wudu Required (But Recommended)

  • Wudu is not obligatory for Sa‘i

  • But remaining in wudu is highly recommended

✅ 3. Intention (Niyyah)

Make intention in your heart:

“I intend to perform Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah for the sake of Allah.”

(No need to say it aloud.)

🏔️ 3. At Safa: Starting Sa‘i

When you reach Safa, face the Ka‘bah, raise your hands, and praise Allah.

🕋 Duʿā’ at Safa (Authentic Sunnah)

Arabic:

إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ
أَبْدَأُ بِمَا بَدَأَ اللَّهُ بِهِ

Meaning:

Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. I begin with what Allah began with.

Then say three times:

Arabic:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ
لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ
وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Meaning:

Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs all dominion and praise, and He has power over all things.

Then make personal duʿā’.

📚 (Sahih Muslim)

🔄 4. During Sa‘i (7 Rounds)

📌 Counting the Rounds

  • Safa → Marwah = 1

  • Marwah → Safa = 2

  • End at Marwah on the 7th round

🟢 Green Light Area (For Men)

  • Men jog lightly between the two green markers

  • Women walk normally

🕊️ Recommended Duʿā’s During Sa‘i

There is no fixed duʿā’ for each round. You may:

  • Make duʿā’

  • Do dhikr

  • Recite Qur’an

  • Speak to Allah in your own language

Below are helpful thematic examples.

🔹 Round 1 – Trust in Allah

“O Allah, just as You helped Hajar, help me in my difficulties.”

🔹 Round 2 – Relief from Hardship

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ فَرِّجْ هَمِّي

Meaning:

O Allah, remove my distress.

🔹 Round 3 – Provision

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي رِزْقًا حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا

Meaning:

O Allah, grant me lawful and pure provision.

🔹 Round 4 – Patience

Arabic:

يَا صَبُورُ أَعِنِّي عَلَى الصَّبْرِ

Meaning:

O Most Patient, help me to be patient.

🔹 Round 5 – Family & Children

“O Allah, protect my family and guide my children.”

🔹 Round 6 – Faith & Steadfastness

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ

Meaning:

O Allah, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.

🔹 Round 7 – Acceptance

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي

Meaning:

O Allah, accept this from me.

🏁 5. After Completing Sa‘i

✅ 1. End at Marwah

Make duʿā’ as you did at Safa (without repeating the opening verse).

✅ 2. Reflect on the Story of Hajar (عليها السلام)

Sa‘i reminds us:

  • Help may come after effort

  • Allah’s mercy often appears when hope seems gone

  • Zamzam came because of trust + action

✅ 3. After Sa‘i in ‘Umrah

  • Men: Shave or trim hair

  • Women: Trim a small portion of hair

This completes ‘Umrah.

🌟 6. Spiritual Meaning of Sa‘i

  • Safa & Marwah represent hope and struggle

  • Sa‘i teaches us that running to Allah is never wasted

  • Even today, Allah honors Hajar’s footsteps

📖 The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Perform Sa‘i, for Allah has prescribed Sa‘i upon you.”
(Ahmad – Hasan)

🤍 Final Reflection

Sa‘i teaches us:

Do your part sincerely —
then trust Allah completely.

Every step you take between Safa and Marwah is written as worship.

May Allah accept your Sa‘i, relieve your worries, and grant you Zamzam-like solutions in your life.
