Tawaf: A Complete Guide

🌿 1. What is Tawaf?

Tawaf means to walk around something.
In Islamic worship, it refers to circling the Ka‘bah seven times in a counter-clockwise direction, keeping the Ka‘bah on your left.

📖 Allah says:

“And let them perform Tawaf around the Ancient House.”
(Qur’an 22:29)

🧭 2. Things to Do BEFORE Tawaf

✅ A. Make Intention (Niyyah)

The intention is made in the heart, not aloud.

Example intention (not required to say):

“I intend to perform Tawaf for the sake of Allah.”

✅ B. Be in a State of Purity

  • Wudu is required

  • Clothes must be clean

  • ‘Awrah must be properly covered

✅ C. For Men: Idtiba‘ (If Applicable)

During Tawaf al-Qudum or ‘Umrah Tawaf, men uncover the right shoulder (Idtiba‘).

✅ D. Face the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad)

At the starting point, face the Black Stone and say:

🕋 Dua at the Start of Tawaf

Arabic:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Meaning:

In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest.

If possible, kiss the Black Stone. If not, point toward it and say Allahu Akbar.

🔄 3. During Tawaf (7 Rounds)

📌 Important Rule

There is NO fixed duʿā’ for each round that the Prophet ﷺ made obligatory.
You may:

  • Make any duʿā’

  • Recite Qur’an

  • Do dhikr

  • Ask Allah in your own language

Below are recommended and commonly practiced duʿā’s.

🔁 Duʿā’ Between Rukn al-Yamani and Hajar al-Aswad

(This is the ONLY duʿā’ authentically reported to be repeated every round)

🕋 Arabic

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً
وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً
وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

🌍 Meaning

Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

📚 (Abu Dawud – Hasan)

🕊️ Suggested Duʿā’s for Each Round (Optional)

Meaning:

O Allah, guide me and keep me firm.

🔹 Round 4 – Mercy

Arabic:

يَا رَحْمٰنُ ارْحَمْنِي

Meaning:

O Most Merciful, have mercy on me.

🔹 Round 5 – Protection

🏁 4. After Completing Tawaf

✅ A. Cover Right Shoulder (Men)

End Idtiba‘ after Tawaf.

✅ B. Pray Two Rak‘ah at Maqam Ibrahim (If Possible)

📖 Allah says:

“And take the Maqam of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.”
(Qur’an 2:125)

Recommended Recitation:

  • Rak‘ah 1: Surah al-Kafirun (109)

  • Rak‘ah 2: Surah al-Ikhlas (112)

✅ C. Drink Zamzam Water

🕋 Duʿā’ When Drinking Zamzam

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا،
وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا،
وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ

Meaning:

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and healing from every illness.

✅ D. Make Duʿā’

This is a very special moment—ask Allah freely.

🌟 5. Spiritual Meaning of Tawaf

  • Circling the Ka‘bah shows that Allah is the center of life

  • Just as angels perform Tawaf around the Throne, believers perform Tawaf around the Ka‘bah

  • Tawaf removes arrogance and fills the heart with humility

🤍 Final Reflection

Tawaf is not about perfect words—it is about a sincere heart.

Walk slowly.
Cry if you can.
Ask boldly.
Trust completely.

Allah listens.

May Allah accept your Tawaf, forgive your sins, and write for you return again and again to His Sacred House.
